Wuthering Heights: Sympathy With The Villain Essay -- essays research
Heathcliff, the main character in Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, has no heart. He is evil to the core - so savage that his lone purpose is to ruin others. Yet at the very moment at which the reader would be expected to feel the most antipathy towards the brute -after he has destroyed his wife, after he has degraded the life of a potentially great man, and after he has watched the death of his son occur with no care nor concern, the reader finds himself feeling strangely sympathetic towards this character. The answer to this oddity lies in the presentation of the character himself, which causes us to be more pitying of him than we otherwise might. Bronteââ¬â¢s describes the young boy, Heathcliff, asâ⬠dark, almost as if he came from the devil,â⬠immediately spurring the reader to view the character as evil and immoral. His actions from thence forward largely tend to enhance this notion. From the very get go he hates Hindley, and although the feeling is mutual, Heathcliff certainly does his just portion of cruel deeds. In one incident Mr Earnshaw has given both Hindley and Heathcliff a colt. When Heathcliffââ¬â¢s colt goes lame, he threatens to blackmail Hindley if he does not trade with him. At a young age, he begins to plot revenge against Hindley. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back,â⬠he says, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t care how long I wait, if I can only do it at last. I hope he will not die before I do!â⬠And in his adult years, we find him teaching Hindleyââ¬â¢s son Hareton to swear desiring that the boy become just as foul as he. As the novel continues, Heathcliff devel ops another aversion. This time, to the man that married his lover, Edgar Linton. In one particular scene Edgar, Catherine, and Heathcliff are all involved in a passionate dispute. ââ¬Å"I wish you the joy of a milk-blooded coward,â⬠he says, ââ¬Å"....I compliment you on your taste. And that is the slavering, shivering thing you preferred me too. I would not strike him with my fist, but Iââ¬â¢d kick him with my foot and experience considerable satisfaction.â⬠After the completion of this speech, Heathcliff proceeds to just as he had discussed. Later, to gain power of Edgar, Heathcliff elopes with Edgarââ¬â¢s sister, Isabella. Their marriage proves to be far from delightful, for Heathcliff has no love for Isabella. ââ¬Å"Is Mr Heathcliff a man?â⬠Isabella writes, ââ¬Å"If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil?â⬠Heathcliffââ¬â¢s com... ...ovel draws to a close, Heathcliff realizes the futility of his life, as it has been spent on that one task. ââ¬Å"I get levers and mattocks to demolish the two houses (referring to Edgarââ¬â¢s and Hindleyââ¬â¢s) and train myself to be capable of working like Hercules, and when everything is ready and in my power, I find the will to life a slate off either roof has vanished!...I could do it; and none would hinder me. But where is the use?...I have lost the faculty of enjoying their destruction, and I am too idle to destroy for nothing.â⬠Upon realizing this, Heathcliff wills himself to die. Thus, despite Heathcliffââ¬â¢s immoral behavior and throughly evil actions, the book closes leaving the reader with a pitying disposition on the characterââ¬â¢s behalf. After never being taught to love, being abused, losing ones love, and living for one thing only to later discover itââ¬â¢s futilty, one might ponder that Heathcliff couldnââ¬â¢t help but be how was. The circumstances were almost beyond his control. The passionate, violent environment of Wuthering Heights shaped him into the fiend that he was. And to read of that hellish existence is enough to impart a sympathetic sigh from even the most critical of readers.

Plato and the Allegory of the Cave Essay
The son of a wealthy and noble family, Plato (427-347 B.C.) was preparing for a career in politics when the trial and eventual execution of Socrates (399 B.C.) changed the course of his life. He abandoned his political career and turned to philosophy, opening a school on the outskirts of Athens dedicated to the Socratic search for wisdom. Platoââ¬â¢s school, then known as the Academy, was the first university in western history and operated from 387 B.C. until A.D. 529, when it was closed by Justinian. Unlike his mentor Socrates, Plato was both a writer and a teacher. His writings are in the form of dialogues, with Socrates as the principal speaker. In the Allegory of the Cave, Plato described symbolically the predicament in which mankind finds itself and proposes a way of salvation. The Allegory presents, in brief form, most of Platoââ¬â¢s major philosophical assumptions: his belief that the world revealed by our senses is not the real world but only a poor copy of it, and that the real world can only be apprehended intellectually; his idea that knowledge cannot be transferred from teacher to student, but rather that education consists in directing studentââ¬â¢s minds toward what is real and important and allowing them to apprehend it for themselves; his faith that the universe ultimately is good; his conviction that enlightened individuals have an obligation to the rest of society, and that a good society must be one in which the truly wise (the Philosopher-King) are the ru lers. The Allegory of the Cave can be found in Book VII of Platoââ¬â¢s best-known work, The Republic, a lengthy dialogue on the nature of justice. Often regarded as a utopian blueprint, The Republic is dedicated toward a discussion of the education required of a Philosopher-King. The following selection is taken from the Benjamin Jowett translation (Vintage, 1991), pp. 253-261. As you read the Allegory, try to make a mental picture of the cave Plato describes. Better yet, why not draw a picture of it and refer to it as you read the selection. In many ways, understanding Platoââ¬â¢s Allegory of the Cave will make your foray into the world of philosophical thought much less burdensome. * * * * * * [Socrates] And now, I said, let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened: ââ¬âBehold! human beings living in a underground cave, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the cave; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads. Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see, if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets. [Glaucon] I see. [Socrates] And do you see, I said, men passing along the wall carrying all sorts of vessels, and statues and figures of animals made of wood and stone and various materials, which appear over the wall? Some of them are talking, others silent. [Glaucon] You have shown me a strange image, and they are strange prisoners. [Socrates] Like ourselves, I replied; and they see only their own shadows, or the shadows of one another, which the fire throws on the opposite wall of the cave? [Glaucon] True, he said; how could they see anything but the shadows if they were never allowed to move their heads? [Socrates] And of the objects which are being carried in like manner they would only see the shadows? [Glaucon] Yes, he said. [Socrates] And if they were able to converse with one another, would they not suppose that they were naming what was actually before them? [Glaucon] Very true. [Socrates] And suppose further that the prison had an echo which came from the other side, would they not be sure to fancy when one of the passers-by spoke that the voice which they heard came from the passing shadow? [Glaucon] No question, he replied. [Socrates] To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images. [Glaucon] That is certain. [Socrates] And now look again, and see what will naturally follow if the prisoners are released and disabused of their error. At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen the shadows; and then conceive some one saying to him, that what he saw before was an illusion, but that now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye is turned towards more real existence, he has a clearer vision, -what will be his reply? And you may further imagine that his instructor is pointing to the objects as they pass and requiring him to name them, -will he not be perplexed? Will he not fancy that the shadows which he formerly saw are truer than the objects which are now shown to him? [Glaucon] Far truer. [Socrates] And if he is compelled to look straight at the light, will he not have a pain in his eyes which will make him turn away to take and take in the objects of vision which he can see, and which he will conceive to be in reality clearer than the things which are now being shown to him? [Glaucon] True, he now. [Socrates] And suppose once more, that he is reluctantly dragged up a steep and rugged ascent, and held fast until he ââ¬Ës forced into the presence of the sun himself, is he not likely to be pained and irritated? When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities. [Glaucon] Not all in a moment, he said. [Socrates] He will require to grow accustomed to the sight of the upper world. And first he will see the shadows best, next the reflections of men and other objects in the water, and then the objects themselves; then he will gaze upon the light of the moon and the stars and the spangled heaven; and he will see the sky and the stars by night better than the sun or the light of the sun by day? [Glaucon] Certainly. [Socrates] Last of he will be able to see the sun, and not mere reflections of him in the water, but he will see him in his own proper place, and not in another; and he will contemplate him as he is. [Glaucon] Certainly. [Socrates] He will then proceed to argue that this is he who gives the season and the years, and is the guardian of all that is in the visible world, and in a certain way the cause of all things which he and his fellows have been accustomed to behold? [Glaucon] Clearly, he said, he would first see the sun and then reason about him. [Socrates] And when he remembered his old habitation, and the wisdom of the cave and his fellow-prisoners, do you not suppose that he would felicitate himself on the change, and pity them? [Glaucon] Certainly, he would. [Socrates] And if they were in the habit of conferring honors among themselves on those who were quickest to observe the passing shadows and to remark which of them went before, and which followed after, and which were together; and who were therefore best able to draw conclusions as to the future, do you think that he would care for such honors and glories, or envy the possessors of them? Would he not say with Homer, Better to be the poor servant of a poor master, and to endure anything, rather than think as they do and live after their manner? [Glaucon] Yes, he said, I think that he would rather suffer anything than entertain these false notions and live in this miserable manner. [Socrates] Imagine once more, I said, such an one coming suddenly out of the sun to be replaced in his old situation; would he not be certain to have his eyes full of darkness? [Glaucon] To be sure, he said. [Socrates] And if there were a contest, and he had to compete in measuring the shadows with the prisoners who had never moved out of the cave, while his sight was still weak, and before his eyes had become steady (and the time which would be needed to acquire this new habit of sight might be very considerable) would he not be ridiculous? Men would say of him that up he went and down he came without his eyes; and that it was better not even to think of ascending; and if any one tried to loose another and lead him up to the light, let them only catch the offender, and they would put him to death. [Glaucon] No question, he said. [Socrates] This entire allegory, I said, you may now append, dear Glaucon, to the previous argument; the prison-house is the world of sight, the light of the fire is the sun, and you will not misapprehend me if you interpret the journey upwards to be the ascent of the soul into the intellectual world according to my poor belief, which, at your desire, I have expressed whether rightly or wrongly God knows. But, whether true or false, my opinion is that in the world of knowledge the idea of good appears last of all, and is seen only with an effort; and, when seen, is also inferred to be the universal author of all things beautiful and right, parent of light and of the lord of light in this visible world, and the immediate source of reason and truth in the intellectual; and that this is the power upon which he who would act rationally, either in public or private life must have his eye fixed. [Glaucon] I agree, he said, as far as I am able to understand you. [Socrates] Moreover, I said, you must not wonder that those who attain to this beatific vision are unwilling to descend to human affairs; for their souls are ever hastening into the upper world where they desire to dwell; which desire of theirs is very natural, if our allegory may be trusted. [Glaucon] Yes, very natural. [Socrates] And is there anything surprising in one who passes from divine contemplations to the evil state of man, misbehaving himself in a ridiculous manner; if, while his eyes are blinking and before he has become accustomed to the surrounding darkness, he is compelled to fight in courts of law, or in other places, about the images or the shadows of images of justice, and is endeavoring to meet the conceptions of those who have never yet seen absolute justice? [Glaucon] Anything but surprising, he replied. [Socrates] Any one who has common sense will remember that the bewilderments of the eyes are of two kinds, and arise from two causes, either from coming out of the light or from going into the light, which is true of the mindââ¬â¢s eye, quite as much as of the bodily eye; and he who remembers this when he sees any one whose vision is perplexed and weak, will not be too ready to laugh; he will first ask whether that soul of man has come out of the brighter light, and is unable to see because unaccustomed to the dark, or having turned from darkness to the day is dazzled by excess of light. And he will count the one happy in his condition and state of being, and he will pity the other; or, if he have a mind to laugh at the soul which comes from below into the light, there will be more reason in this than in the laugh which greets him who returns from above out of the light into the cave. [Glaucon] That, he said, is a very just distinction. [Socrates] But then, if I am right, certain professors of education must be wrong when they say that they can put a knowledge into the soul which was not there before, like sight into blind eyes. [Glaucon] They undoubtedly say this, he replied. [Socrates] Whereas, our argument shows that the power and capacity of learning exists in the soul already; and that just as the eye was unable to turn from darkness to light without the whole body, so too the instrument of knowledge can only by the movement of the whole soul be turned from the world of becoming into that of being, and learn by degrees to endure the sight of being, and of the brightest and best of being, or in other words, of the good. [Glaucon] Very true. [Socrates] And must there not be some art which will effect conversion in the easiest and quickest manner; not implanting the faculty of sight, for that exists already, but has been turned in the wrong direction, and is looking away from the truth? [Glaucon] Yes, he said, such an art may be presumed. [Socrates] And whereas the other so-called virtues of the soul seem to be akin to bodily qualities, for even when they are not originally innate they can be implanted later by habit and exercise, the of wisdom more than anything else contains a divine element which always remains, and by this conversion is rendered useful and profitable; or, on the other hand, hurtful and useless. Did you never observe the narrow intelligence flashing from the keen eye of a clever rogue ââ¬âhow eager he is, how clearly his paltry soul sees the way to his end; he is the reverse of blind, but his keen eyesight is forced into the service of evil, and he is mischievous in proportion to his cleverness. [Glaucon] Very true, he said. [Socrates] But what if there had been a circumcision of such natures in the days of their youth; and they had been severed from those sensual pleasures, such as eating and drinking, which, like leaden weights, were attached to them at their birth, and which drag them down and turn the vision of their souls upon the things that are below ââ¬âif, I say, they had been released from these impediments and turned in the opposite direction, the very same faculty in them would have seen the truth as keenly as they see what their eyes are turned to now. [Glaucon] Very likely. [Socrates] Yes, I said; and there is another thing which is likely. or rather a necessary inference from what has preceded, that neither the uneducated and uninformed of the truth, nor yet those who never make an end of their education, will be able ministers of State; not the former, because they have no single aim of duty which is the rule of all their actions, private as well as public; nor the latter, because they will not act at all except upon compulsion, fancying that they are already dwelling apart in the islands of the blest. [Glaucon] Very true, he replied. [Socrates] Then, I said, the business of us who are the founders of the State will be to compel the best minds to attain that knowledge which we have already shown to be the greatest of all-they must continue to ascend until they arrive at the good; but when they have ascended and seen enough we must not allow them to do as they do now. [Glaucon] What do you mean? [Socrates] I mean that they remain in the upper world: but this must not be allowed; they must be made to descend again among the prisoners in the cave, and partake of their labors and honors, whether they are worth having or not. [Glaucon] But is not this unjust? he said; ought we to give them a worse life, when they might have a better? [Socrates] You have again forgotten, my friend, I said, the intention of the legislator, who did not aim at making any one class in the State happy above the rest; the happiness was to be in the whole State, and he held the citizens together by persuasion and necessity, making them benefactors of the State, and therefore benefactors of one another; to this end he created them, not to please themselves, but to be his instruments in binding up the State. [Glaucon] True, he said, I had forgotten. [Socrates] Observe, Glaucon, that there will be no injustice in compelling our philosophers to have a care and providence of others; we shall explain to them that in other States, men of their class are not obliged to share in the toils of politics: and this is reasonable, for they grow up at their own sweet will, and the government would rather not have them. Being self-taught, they cannot be expected to show any gratitude for a culture which they have never received. But we have brought you into the world to be rulers of the hive, kings of yourselves and of the other citizens, and have educated you far better and more perfectly than they have been educated, and you are better able to share in the double duty. Wherefore each of you, when his turn comes, must go down to the general underground abode, and get the habit of seeing in the dark. When you have acquired the habit, you will see ten thousand times better than the inhabitants of the cave, and you will know what the several images are, and what they represent, because you have seen the beautiful and just and good in their truth. And thus our State which is also yours will be a reality, and not a dream only, and will be administered in a spirit unlike that of other States, in which men fight with one another about shadows only and are distracted in the struggle for power, which in their eyes is a great good. Whereas the truth is that the State in which the rulers are most reluctant to govern is always the best and most quietly governed, and the State in which they are most eager, the worst. [Glaucon] Quite true, he replied. [Socrates] And will our pupils, when they hear this, refuse to take their turn at the toils of State, when they are allowed to spend the greater part of their time with one another in the heavenly light? [Glaucon] Impossible, he answered; for they are just men, and the commands which we impose upon them are just; there can be no doubt that every one of them will take office as a stern necessity, and not after the fashion of our present rulers of State. [Socrates] Yes, my friend, I said; and there lies the point. You must contrive for your future rulers another and a better life than that of a ruler, and then you may have a well-ordered State; for only in the State which offers this, will they rule who are truly rich, not in silver and gold, but in virtue and wisdom, which are the true blessings of life. Whereas if they go to the administration of public affairs, poor and hungering after theââ¬â¢ own private advantage, thinking that hence they are to snatch the chief good, order there can never be; for they will be fighting about office, and the civil and domestic broils which thus arise will be the ruin of the rulers themselves and of the whole State. [Glaucon] Most true, he replied. [Socrates] And the only life which looks down upon the life of political ambition is that of true philosophy. Do you know of any other? [Glaucon] Indeed, I do not, he said. [Socrates] And those who govern ought not to be lovers of the task? For, if they are, there will be rival lovers, and they will fight. [Glaucon] No question. [Socrates] Who then are those whom we shall compel to be guardians? Surely they will be the men who are wisest about affairs of State, and by whom the State is best administered, and who at the same time have other honors and another and a better life than that of politics? [Glaucon] They are the men, and I will choose them, he replied. [Socrates] And now shall we consider in what way such guardians will be produced, and how they are to be brought from darkness to light, ââ¬â as some are said to have ascended from the world below to the gods? [Glaucon] By all means, he replied. [Socrates] The process, I said, is not the turning over of an oyster-shell, but the turning round of a soul passing from a day which is little better than night to the true day of being, that is, the ascent from below, which we affirm to be true philosophy? [Glaucon] Quite so.

The Violence Is An Acceptable Act - 1799 Words
Society is any group of people usually sharing a common goal. Within a society, most people have morals they follow. Murderers within societies go against one of the biggest morals of all, which is taking away a personââ¬â¢s life. Numerous killers have psychological problems that make them believe violence is an acceptable act. Although killing is a huge problem in this world, many killers do not even realize how they are affecting peopleââ¬â¢s lives. The reality is, no matter what kind of disorder the murderer may have, killing is still affecting society. Within the huge varieties of murders there are, there are many different kinds of killers. I think if all psychologists in this field came together to work as one, they could put an end to this killing, and it would affect society in a positive way by having less crimes happen. Psychotics and Psychopaths are just two of the mental disorders that have to do with the psychological side of why people kill. Psychotics have a ââ¬Å"Complete loss of oneââ¬â¢s sense of realityâ⬠(Brogaard, Berit). Some symptoms of psychosis are hallucinations, beliefs that are not logical, being paranoid, and strange behavior. These characteristics go directly with the definition because they all describe how psychotics are not in tune with the reality of situations. Think of how you would feel if you were so mentally ill that you heard voices in your head and hallucinate in the middle of doing something. I know I would feel completely lost (Brogaard, Berit; Bloodthirsty - Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer). Although psychotics and psychopaths are both mental disorders, they think in very different ways. Psychopaths are definitely in tune with the world around them because like I mentioned earlier, they plan out their crimes. Psychopaths feel no guilt for what they do, h ave impossible goals in mind, think they are better than others, and they have a difficult time following rules (Brogaard, Berit;

Choosing Destiny Essay Example For Students
Choosing Destiny Essay Throughout life, one will encounter many ups, downs, highs and lows. Its quite obvious that some will handle the downs and lows better than others. These problems can range anywhere from something serious such as family conflicts, or it may be something foolish like laundry issues. Others find that their lows in life are due to the fact that they face the same daily obstacles, and tend to get annoyed with the repetition behind them. Life all of a sudden seems to have no particular meaning, and a person begins to feel worthless. Life in itself is repetitive, however a person can only take so much until they begin to need a serious modification. The concept stated above is demonstrated in A Jest of God by Margaret Laurence and The Book of Eve by Constance Beresford-Howe. In A Jest of God, Rachel is deprived of a fulfilling lifestyle mainly because of the limits she is placed under by her mother. Day in, and day out, Rachel is living a confined life and feels there is no possibility of changing it. Her sister Stacey has married and moved away and Rachel is the only support her mother has. Rachel feels obliged to provide and care for her. After her affair with Nick Kazlik, Rachel begins to have a different outlook on life and therefore decides to change it drastically. In The Book of Eve, Eve is restricted to some of lifes simple things such as going out for walks. Her husband Burt is afraid of fire and resents being left alone even for short intervals. After Eva decides to leave, she experiences a whole new lifestyle. Eva now has enough time to go out for strolls, shop, and is still left with too much time in which to contemplate her situation. In each novel its evident that the protagonists are getting fed up with their lives and are taking matters into their own hands. In A Jest of God the protagonist is Rachel, a thin, tall, lanky teacher in the town of Manawaka. Rachel lives with, supports and cares for her mother despite her somewhat negative feelings towards her. Rachels sister Stacey does not care to visit her mother, and clearly does not have any intentions of attending to her medical needs. Therefore, Rachel is left with an awfully irritating mother who criticizes and controls her life wherever, and whenever she gets the opportunity to do so. At the age of thirty-four, Rachel is unmarried and living with her mother. Her life revolves mainly around her grade one class at the school she teaches, and her wonderful mother. She doesnt exactly associate with many people except for Calla, a teacher at her school and Willard Sidley, the principal of the institution. Rachel rarely goes out except for the occasional movie with Calla. Calla frequents a local Tabernacle, and quite often invites Rachel to go along. However, she does not feel comfortable attending such a place and rarely agrees to going. Willard also invites Rachel to dinner with his wife and a friend, but Rachel doesnt necessarily appreciate their company and declines the offer. As a result of her ordinary life, Rachel begins to long for something different, particularly a husband. The person to thank for Rachels change is Nick Klazik. He comes into her life as a wake up call! As Rachels sexual affair with Nick becomes more intense, the reader notices a significant change in Rachels outlook on life. Until Nick came along, she kept more to herself and thought of nothing more than living a day to day humble life. However, Nick brought out the best in her and its clear that Rachels ideas about her future begin to change drastically, particularly regarding children. .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 , .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .postImageUrl , .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 , .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81:hover , .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81:visited , .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81:active { border:0!important; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81:active , .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81 .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uff82fcf454b25f24c97231ec6398fb81:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: pearl harbor EssayRachel mentions quite often her studies of babies and their mothers. Rachel will speak of a baby and automatically give reference to a book she read regarding the same topic. For the first time, Rachel feels loved and begins to consider marriage and a family. For Rachel, the only family she has is her mother. She has no sense of having something of her own, such as a husband and children. Nick has been the change in Rachels life. He was the one responsible for taking Rachel out of her daily routines. Nick was the source of amusement for Rachel. Rachel changed mainly after her close encounter with motherhood. Regardless of what society would think of her, Rachel was willing to keep her child. For Rachel it would be an escape from her present life. This baby is just what Rachel needed, someone she could love and care for, someone that was part of her. After Rachel discovered that she wasnt pregnant but actually had a tumor, she took her life into her hands. Until then it had been partially or almost fully controlled by her mother, but things were just about to change. Life had to change for Rachel. The whole concept of living in the same small town, with the same people was getting to her. Rachel was watching everyone else grow up, except herself. She barely recognized students she had taught in grade one because they had obviously changed. However, her students recognized her, same old Miss Cameron! Thats exactly why things were getting out of hand. Rachel was getting older and nothing was changing. Thats why she decided to move, because it was time. For once, Rachel did not consider her mothers suggestion to stay in Manawaka. She insisted on leaving and that would be the final say. A new city would bring a new job, new friends, and hopefully, a whole new lifestyle. In A Jest of God, the reader is guided through Rachels problem throughout the novel as the plot unfolds. The reader only finds out how Rachel intends to deal with her dilemma at the end of the book. In The Book of Eve the novel begins with the drastic change and we get to live through Evas different lifestyle with her. Every so often she mentions what caused her to leave, and so we are not informed all at once of her reasons for leaving, but gradually throughout the story. In The Book of Eve, Eva is getting frustrated because her sick husband is treating her as a servant. Eva finds herself following a very strict lifestyle due to Burt and she therefore runs away. She runs not only from the servitude of nursing Burt, but also from running the house, shopping, cleaning up and that dull routine. Its actually quite selfish of Eva to leave Burt after being devoted to him for forty years, however, she had to act quickly because her life was slowly being consumed. Eva has changed in order to accommodate to her needs. In this case, her needs are nice and simple. What Eva needs is solitude; she needs time to be with herself. Now that Burt is no longer a burden to her, she can lead her own life and make her own decisions without the constant worry of his harassment. Due to Eves spontaneous departure from home, she had to begin a new way of living. Now Eva is not as financially stable as she was with Burt, yet she still manages. She deprives herself of some things that wouldve been essential to her in any other situation, in order to save money. She eats soups and other foods that are cheaper, but not necessarily healthier for her. Eva declines money that her son Neil offers to her. Since Eva was the one to leave Burt, she feels that its in her best interest not to depend on any money from him or from her son. If Eva did receive any donations from her son, it would be as if she had lost her battle. If she accepted them, it would be like saying that yes she couldnt support herself. One of Eves quests was to be able to take care of herself and therefore she was not susceptible to any offerings. .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 , .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .postImageUrl , .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 , .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7:hover , .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7:visited , .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7:active { border:0!important; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7:active , .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7 .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u470bda86efee1c9ddcb065bcf9fc80e7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Thermal Energy EssayAll the suffering and economizing that Eva goes through is basically to prove not only to others, but mainly to herself, that she doesnt have to put up with other peoples problems. In this case, since the problem is her husband, it makes it that much more difficult to restrain herself from returning home. Eva must have complete dedication to herself and to her goals to allow for such heartless behaviour towards others. Eva is better off in the sense that she has her solitude, yet she still has friends. Not only does Eva have friends, but she also still has a sex life. Leaving Burt did not mean Eva was now going to become a nobody, and she made sure of that. Over the course of the novel, Eva did change considerably. Change isnt possibly the best word, but rather recognition. The most important outcome of Eves escape was discovering more about herself. Had she not been so incredibly courageous to leave Burt, she wouldnt have been able to learn from her life experiences. When comparing Rachels character to Eves, its ridiculous to assume they were under the same circumstances. Eves life and Rachels were two completely different sagas. However when seriously thought out, they are both pursuing the same thing. Both women were indeed struggling to achieve their own wants and needs when surely these needs were in conflict with other family members. Life is like a movie. When the movie comes to the end, its rewound and everything starts all over again. Every day in life can be compared to a movie quite easily. Day after day, the same routine tends to occur. Whether or not one wishes to modify that routine, is based on their strength, courage, determination and physical and mental capacity.

Marketing Logistics and Retail Management
Question: Discuss about the Marketing Logistics and Retail Management. Answer: Introduction: Myer is Australias full line departmental store trading in all the states and one of the territories of Australia. It deals with range of womens and mens wear, childrens clothing, footwear, accessories, toys, books, homeware, electrical goods, cosmetics, food and travel goods. It is Australias largest departmental stores and has always remained consistent with latest style and fashion trends. Myers has about 67 retail store across main location in Australia that offers their well-recognized brands to customers and the enhanced online and digital platforms have boost their sale. Currently 55,000 stakeholders, 1200 suppliers, large number of customers and 12,500 team members deal and engage with their brand. In 2013, their total sales generation was about $3.1 billion (Myer 2017). Their main orientation towards marketing is to bring a transformational change in retailing by dealing with creative agency who will take into the digital future. Under their current creative agency, Badgar Ogilvy, they are changing their channel mix and moving to a digital model. However despite digital marketing, they also give value to advertising and catalogues promotion. Their aim is to deliver more focused offer to customer and they are reviewing their suppliers to align with their strategic priorities and their vision of Myer way of working (Oliver 2017). It major product offering is the apparels and the main supplier is PVH heritage supplier who offer brands like Van Heusen, Calvin Klein, Pierre Cardin and Tommy Hilfiger. Through their new Myer brands like Seed, French Connection, Nine West, Zara and H M, they are offering fashion-driven as well as accessible products to customers (Traill-Nash and Traill-Nash 2017). Analysis of 5Cs of the Company Company: One of the biggest strength of the Myer is the presence of its departmental store at prime locations in Australia and its chain of mid to high range departmental store. Their New Myer brand strategy has helped to provide a variety of choices to customers at an affordable cost. Their customer-focused strategy has helped them to build their strong brand presence and reputation in Australia (Inside Retail 2017).However one key weakness is that their customer base is limited to Australia and they do not have a global presence. This is because of under-developed distribution channel which serves only in restricted locations in Australia. Despite this, Myers have the opportunity to build their global reputation as retail store by partnership with foreign players and developing innovative promotional strategies. This might not be easy in the presence of threats like changing customers preference and their more cautious attitude in terms of spending (Lee and Lee 2015). Customers- Myer is particularly offering their product range to middle class and upper middle class individuals in Australia. It is difficult for the retails departmental store to target all segments in Australia due to changing customers preference day by day. According to Roy Morgan value segments, the Myer customers in Australia are conscious about health and fitness. They are more likely to go for short holidays and use media considerably. Hence, based on this analysis of customers attitude, Myers plan their marketing strategies and promotional activities for their brands. Collaborators- Through the Myer Supplier of the Year Awards, Myer recognize all those brands, designers and other partners who play a role in delivering innovative retail experience to the customers. In 2016, M.A.C was declared Myers coveted Supplier of the Year by their innovative ways to engage customers. The general manager of M.A.C was their key business partner and Toni Maticeski was declared the best designer of the year for his fashion-forward creations. Other partners of Myers include the advertising agency who provide community support and the Group Managing Director who play a role in the creative process of retail business at Myer (Govender and Govender 2017). Competitors- David Jones Limited, another Australian departmental store is one of the biggest competitors of Myers. David Jones also has about 37 departmental stores nationwide and their marketing strategy is giving stiff competition to Myer. Both have similar business strategies and due to this competition in the market, they have struggled to reach their target sales figure. For example, Myer has been invested in renowned female figure, Jennifer Hawkins, Miss Universe 2004 to promote their brands. In the same way, Myer collaborated with Victorias secret model to boost their sales. Although the sales margin of Myer is higher than David Jones, Myer is under more debts than its competitors. Harris Scarfe, Kmart Australia and Target Australia are the new rivals of Myer and the CEO of Myer had released The Competitive pricing policy to stay ahead of other competitors in the market (MYER pty ltd. 2017). Context- Myer has been challenged by certain political development in Australia. They are not happy with the goods and services tax applied on imported goods. The GST applies for imports worth more than $1000 and they think that it will create an unfair playing field for local business and create difficult trading environment for them. There is question regarding the cost of GST for items and the income benefit of the tax (ABC News 2017).Bernie Brookes, the head of Myer have even blamed the Australian governments budget measures as a factor creating tough trading condition and leading to patchy sales (Greenblat 2017). Collection of information about 5Cs Myer have restricted their price based promotions and replaced them with consumer focused promotions to know their customers and target mostly sophisticated customers to offer range of products offer. They had employed tactics like One day offers, Super Saturdays, and Secret Sales to boost the sales. Their business has been challenges by digital disruption and the globalization of retail sector. In order to restore their relevance with their customers, they have decided to employ their four pillars to bring the love of shopping in consumers life. To identify their loyalty customer base, they have done substantial research on Australian customer retail segments and used the Roy Morgan data to modify their strategy (Eizenberg et al. 2015). They identified three groups of customers through these research- high value consumers who are up to date with fashion, professionally successful customers who have an interest in brands and those who look for better every day value and affordable fa shion. Based on different customer preference, they divided their brands into different categories to suit the marketplace (Cameron 2017). Myers have known about their true competitors in the market after they intense sales rivalry with other departmental stores like David Jones and Target Kmart who offer similar products in different target markets. These upper class departmental stored located in prime locations provides competitive pricing. This trend in the market has highly influenced their sales figure and store maintenance. The research on main customer base has helped them to understand how the context of business is changing with globalization and rise in mobile and digital technology. They know that their market is dominated by females and it is mainly customer based due to premium pricing and brand categories. They are aware that their business is built on the prestige of their brands and hence they try to offer well-known prestigious brands and build strong customer relationship. The hosting of the Myer Supplier of the Year award is a reflection on how they evaluate the role of each suppliers and appreciate them for being their business partners and suppliers. In the year 2015, they announced PVY Heritage Brands Australia as the Supplier of the year because they provide Myer with well-known brands like Pierre Cardin, Van Heusen, Tommy Hilfiger and many others. The suppliers share their passion with Myer to offer innovative products and take proactive steps to bring growth in business (Media-Release 2017). Developing marketing strategy Based on analysis of the market of Myer in terms of its suppliers, customers and competitors, it can be said that Myer needs to target particular market segments to develop the marketing strategy. Through the Roy Morgan research to categorize their customer base, they have identified three groups of customers for their retail products. They also found that omni-channel customers have given them up to 80% sales compared to customers who shop physically (Cameron 2017). Hence, it is recommended that Myer target such omni-channel customer segment and take adequate steps to embrace digital technology to attract this group of customers. They can invest in digital technology like click and collect to increase online sales and invest in other digital hub to provide in-store experience through digital means. Once this pilot project is successful, the digital hub can be rolled out for other stores nationally. However this change cannot be possible without recruitment of chief digital staffs an d data officers who can lead in the change process. It is also recommended to build the value proposition of the local customers by exciting investment in upgrading the stores and tailoring the according to local customers fashion preferences. They can build value propositions with omni-channel customers by bringing changes in their brand make up and adding latest brands to keep up with the demands in retail industry (Osterwalder et al. 2014). The change and reinvention process should all be linked to the customers. They add more brands by analyzing the most wanted brands currently in the retail market and putting efforts to increase sales margin by inclusion of new and high in demand brands. Hence brand building and sales-led marketing strategies can help in dealing with competitors as well as maintaining customer loyalty base (Zhang et al. 2015). A position statement for the target market can include exceptional shopping experience and customer focused offer to sophisticated customers. The CEO and other retail officers at Myer can take steps to enhance customer service by modifying their flagship stores and efficient store management. Efficient store management can be possible by focusing on low cost and high value products. The upgrading of stores can be done by changing lighting and ambience of the stores and providing visual merchandising to online customers (Pantano 2014). Upgrading the Myers website and expansion of more number of digital service will them to achieve impressive sale performance and deliver high quality and fashionable products. Actions can also be taken on productivity related change such as the value sharing future business goals with key partners and addressing issues related to occupancy cost, space productivity and capital investment in each stores (Fernie and Sparks 2014). The marketing goals can become successful by having a dedicated team who are ready to adapt to new culture of change at the store. Talented and capable people can be recruited to support the system and understand digital process. In case of specialized designation, they can provide extensive training to concerned staffs. They measure the progress and delivery of the new strategy through performance metrics and evaluating their growth within set time frame (West et al. 2015). Justification of marketing mix of the company The growth in target market of any industry depends on the price, product, place and promotion factors. The following steps can be taken to justify the marketing mix in accordance with above recommended marketing strategy for the Myer: Product- As the marketing strategy is customer-focused offer and exceptional shopping experience of consumers; this can be achieved by giving products range that satisfies the needs of target customers. The right product mix will be one that that offer most wanted brands and products complemented by strong omni-channel offer. To inspire and delight their customers, they can invest in brands that provide fashion trends as well as value for their products. Collaboration with well-known brands and international designers can provide significant control and flexibility to Myers business plans (Tambo 2014). Price- Price is also the most important element of attracting customers and bringing profitability in the business. Pricing strategy also helps to shape the perception of the product in consumers eye. To stay ahead of other rivals in the retail industry, their focus should be on giving affordable pricing as well as product offers to customers (Myer2013.annual-report.com.au. 2017). The inclusion of brands like Seed, French Connection and Nine West can help them to battle competition in different sections like arrival of new entrant in retail market and challenges due to online shopping. They can also develop pricing strategies after surveying their existing customers about the things they are looking forward to while shopping at Myer. The inclusion of new brands like Zara and H M can also help to target affordable price and fashionable relevance in products (Traill-Nash and Traill-Nash 2017). Place- In case of Myer, placement or distribution of their product will play a major role in maximizing their productivity. It can go for selective distribution or franchising to enhance their merchandise offer. Myers departmental store already has an advantage of being located in premium locations across Australia to offer their products. In accordance with their omni-channel, they can go for investing in swift digital technology to display their products in a much larger platform from where international customers can also enjoy exceptional shopping experience (Ailawadi and Farris 2017). The focus on best performing stores can help to revive sales figure and restructure cost of products. With a proud history of being the largest departmental store in Australia, this form of prudent action can help to redevelop their balance sheet and achieve flexibility in their business. Reallocation of space and fine tuning merchandise according to store cluster can help to achieve supply chain e fficiencies and a more efficient store network (Lusch et al. 2015). Promotion- As marketing strategy development suggest Myer to invest in new brands to stay ahead of competitors, smart promotional strategy is important to enhance brand recognition and improve sales. Promotion can be done by innovative advertising and sales promotion techniques. With the increase in digital commerce, a point-of-sale system can act as a useful step for inventory management. Optimization of store network and balancing the digital marketing opportunity would act adequate step to integrate the marketing strategy in their retail channel. Effective store network along with attractive advertising techniques can help attract customers to new brands (Kasemsap 2015). Conclusion The report gave insight into the core business and product offerings of Myer, the largest full line departmental store in Australia. With about more than 60 stores in Australia and having their own designer womens wear brands, they have established more than 130 million customer base (Myer 2017). The analysis of the strength and weakness of the company along with key customers and collaborators in the business gave the idea that although they have the advantage of brand reputation, however their business has been challenged by new entrants in the market. To keep up with the demands of retail industry, it is recommended to develop new marketing strategy based on enhanced customer experience and putting more efforts on consumer focused product offer. To succeed in this venture, the support was given by innovative marketing concept in the area of pricing, promotion, product distribution and special emphasis on fashionable products.
