The Wanting Seed

In Anthony Burgess’ The Wanting Seed, the story starts off, in what is known to the main character, Tristram, as the Pelphase. Tristram is a history teacher and knows mostly all there is to know about history. According to Tristram, governments go through three phases: the Pelphase, the Interphase, and the Gusphase. Tristram believes that like almost everything else, government is cyclical. The Pelphase is a time in the government and society where the people are working to better themselves, their surroundings and their country. The people don’t just work for themselves; they work together. Overpopulation has always been a problem in the futuristic London that Burgess portrays. God has become a myth even though some still practice their religion. God has turned into some sort of Santa Clause because everyone is working to better the problems that they and the government are having. The government suggests that homosexuality could help the population troubles, but they don’t enforce it or make it law. People have the choice to have children or be homosexual. The government hands out rations of food every week because the crops aren’t growing and overpopulation is so prevalent. The rations are just enough to keep the people full and content. When the government realizes that nothing is working out and the crops still wont grow and overpopulation is still a giant problem, they give up the current ways and move on to new ways of governing. This brings the Interphase along. The Interphase is black and white compared to the Pelphase. It is a transition phase where things must be broken in order to fix them. When the government realized that giving people the choice to have children or be homosexual isn’t working in everyone’s favor and the crops are still aren’t growing, they made it mandatory to either be gay or have only one child and in addition to that the food rations have gotten smaller. Police (Greyboys) walked the beat in large groups looking for people that were breaking laws or people that weren’t. Taking them to jail for nothing was fine with the Greyboys. Innocent people were thrown in jail and kept in jail just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. With all of the growing animosity towards the Greyboys and the government, people start to question and revolt. Nobody wants to go hungry; the straights don’t want to go gay; the families don’t want to break up. The Interphase didn’t last too long because of how badly the citizens felt about it. People were rising against the government and demanding their rights back. The government couldn’t take the pressure so they just ended up doing nothing. They literally did nothing. They left it up the people. With that decision came the Gusphase. The Gusphase was a wild and crazy time. People were going crazy in the streets, killing and looting. The government had no control over anything anymore. Hungry groups of people started attacking and cooking up Greyboys. They were creating exclusive cannibalistic dining clubs and taking part in intense orgies. The government lost so much of the control it once had, all of the prisons were emptied and the prisoners set free. With so much chaos going on, people were forced to fend for themselves and it became survival of the fittest. During all of the madness, priests and bishops were aloud to preach the word of their God again and that is what people held on to in this time of madness. The Gusphase, just like the Interphase, didn’t last long. The government eventually regained control of the population and things were back to the way they started, Pelphase. In the Pelphase after the horrible Gusphase, things were different than before. People were now aloud to have children and homosexuality wasn’t pressured upon the people. On the surface, it seemed as if the government has learned from their mistakes but under the surface things have taken a very deadly turn. The army had most of the control in the government now. The army went town to town tricking people into joining the army. After the people went through long and rigorous training they were sent off to the front lines in western Ireland. They weren’t fighting the Irish however; they were fighting other British men and women. The government set up elaborate shows to pretend that there was a war and when it came down to the actual battle the two sides of British would clash in a bloody death match. At the end of the fight, officers from the army, who were in on the whole scheme, executed the survivors so know one would find out about their evil idea of population control. Thanks to Tristram’s smarts and instincts, he was able to survive. He made his way back to the army headquarters and told them that he knew the whole plot. They didn’t pay him any mind, gave him his discharge check, and sent him on his way. He ended up going back to where he started before all of the crazy times London experienced in the past couple of years. He landed a job as a war history teacher and bought a new flat with his discharge money. After he was settled he found Beatrice-Joanna and his twin sons. Things finally came full circle for Tristram. In may ways, Tristram’s journey was a lot like the phases that the government went through. He had endured the brunt of each phase. He experienced the worst that each phase had to offer a human being. He survived and lived happily again.

Criminal justice Essay

I will include how crime has a relationship to the law and the government structure as it applies to the criminal justice system. Components of the Criminal Justice System: In the United States, the criminal justice system has three categories: Federal, State, and Military. In addition to the three categories the state has separate divisions that deal with adult and juvenile cases which are comprised of three major components. 1) Law Enforcement perhaps the most important and dangerous. The responsibilities of the Law Enforcement include finding/capturing individuals who break the laws. They are responsible for bringing new changes against perpetrators and for ensuring the cases are strong enough to stand up in court. 2) Courts include prosecution and defense lawyers, judges and juries. The responsibility of the courts is to ensure offenders are given a fair trial; all laws are followed while the cases are being tried. Guidelines for a fair sentencing are being followed. 3) Corrections are to uphold and administer sentences handed down. The Corrections system which is intertwined with Law Enforcement and the courts is a very important and large piece of the criminal justice system because t includes jails, prisons, correctional officers, probation officers, and parole officers which ensure that a defendant’s punishment and all of its stipulations are carried out. (Smith,  1999). Components of the Criminal Justice Process: My understanding of the criminal justice process is that a police officer will arrest you because he or she has reason to believe that yo u committed a felony, misdemeanor, or violation. If charged with a felony or a misdemeanor, the officer must file a complaint in criminal court. You are held for twenty four hours until you are able to appear before a judge. (west,  1999). If you are charged with a violation you will be released and asked to appear in court at a later date and time. A prosecutor will meet with the police officer to determine if there is sufficient evidence to charge you with a crime. If enough evidence is found to charge you with a crime, then you will meet with a representative from the court to decide whether to set bail, release you from jail without bail, or hold you in jail without bail. If there is insufficient evidence found than you will be released from jail immediately. After this is done and you are found to have sufficient evidence saying you committed a crime you will then be brought to court for an arraignment a prosecutor will inform you and an attorney if you have one what kind of charges will be brought against you and you have at that time the opportunity to settle your case without a trial. Your attorney can now negotiate a plea bargain; if you plead guilty. My definition of the word crime: Crime is an act prohibited by law an offence against a public law, a violation of the law in which there is injury to the public or a member of the public. It is also a consensual act or violation in which only the perpetrator is hurt or involved such as personnel use of illegal drugs. A failure to act as required by law, considered morally wrong, a shameful, unwise, or regrettable act. The commission of an act that is forbidden or the omission of a duty that is commanded by a public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that law; especially: a gross violation of the law. It is a foolish or disgraceful act. This is just my opinion on the definition of the word crime. Its relationship to the Law and Government Structure as it applies to the Criminal Justice System: The relationship to the law and government structure as it applies to the criminal justice system is that there must be unity of act and intent to commit a crime. The structure of the law and government of a crime committed is punishment. All systems must respect the rights of individuals set forth in court interpretation of the U. S. Constitution and defined in case law. State constitutions and laws define criminal justice system within each state and delegate the authority and responsibility for criminal justice to various jurisdictions, officials, and institutions. State laws also define criminal behavior and groups of children or acts under jurisdiction of the juvenile courts. Municipalities and counties further define their criminal justice system through local ordinances that proscribe the local agencies responsible for criminal justices processing that were not established by the state. Congress has also established a criminal justice system at a federal level to respond to federal crimes such as bank robbery, kidnapping, and transporting stolen goods across state lines. Conclusion: The criminal justice system and the criminal justice progress have shaped the laws of this country into what they are today.  The criminal justice system has many components that work together to provide justice for criminals and victims of crime. This enables violators of the law to be prosecuted in a fair trial. This is my understanding of the criminal justice system.

The Tempest and Solibo Magnificent Comparative Literature Essay

The Tempest and Solibo Magnificent Comparative Literature - Essay Example To this plan, Stephano accedes with utmost pleasantness. â€Å"Monster, I will kill this man: his daughter and I will be king and queen--save our graces!—and Trinculo and thyself shall be viceroys† (Stephano cited in Shakespeare). Stephano particularly approves of the presence of noise making spirits on the island for they would play music for him when he would become the king. The characters discussed above see that island as a place where they would be free to exercise any rights they would want to. Despite the fact that colonial impulse is represented by numerous characters in the play, there is just one representative of the truly colonized, i.e. Caliban. Caliban offers Stephano to kill Prospero in order to gain control and power, yet for him, it means nothing more than the change of a ruler! Every one makes plans but no one succeeds. â€Å"I am afraid our eyes are bigger than our bellies, and that we have more curiosity than capacity; for we grasp at all, but catc h nothing but wind† (Montaigne 1). On the other hand, in Solibo Magnificent, colonial impulse is represented by the police who exercise a series of undue abuse on the suspects of Solibo’s fatal collapse, and there is no one to keep a check on their investigation. Colonialism may not necessarily be exercised over state, it can also be exercised over people, like it is done in the case of Solibo Magnificent. The excessive colonialism of police can be estimated from the fact that they beat Doudou Menar to death, who had been considerate enough to be the first to make the police aware of Solibo’s assassination. â€Å"They manhandle Congo without pity. Jambette and Diab-Anba-Feuilles twist his arms behind his back, slam him onto a chair, face under a lamp's incandescence† (Chamoiseau 139) The difference between the colonialism discussed in The Tempest and that in Solibo Magnificent is that the former offers rule over land while the latter offers rule over publi c. Slavery: In The Tempst, Ariel plays the role of a slave to Prospero. He has been slave to Prospero ever since he was rescued by him after he was caged in a tree by Sycorax. Throughout the play, Prospero uses Ariel to play the magic tricks on various characters that form part of the story. It is the Ariel who originally sets storm in the sea so that all of the people in it find their way to the island. Ariel is not let free until the end of the story when Prospero plans to leave with his siblings. Even then, Prospero instructs Ariel to look after the seas and make sure that the waters stay calm. Slavery has been a common element both in The Tempest and Solibo Magnificent, though the latter has mixed slavery with racism unlike the former. â€Å"Their African Purity had seemed a defect in the middle of our mixed population, and one said â€Å"Congo† with as much disdain as â€Å"Negro†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Chamoiseau 142). Also, slave in The Tempest enjoys all privileges wi thin the limits imposed by his master unlike Solibo Magnificent, in which slavery is associated with Africans or African Americans as is done in the most traditional settings. People who look like Africans are commonly stereotyped as slaves in the literature. â€Å"In this society education and money and cultured Frenchness matter, but Negro blood is like an ineradicable commonness, a mark of slave ancestry†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Naipaul 205). Language: There is a great difference of the language in which The

Economic Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Economic - Essay Example For instance, oil products in global market are becoming scarce and volatile because of the continuing crisis in the Middle East, the primary suppliers of oil products. In lieu of this, oil prices rose to its highest point in just a very short period of time while demand is getting faster. Conversely, if this oil producing countries return in their normal business term, then the production of oil products will increase, thereby bringing a stability of price. This environment is one of the current examples of inflation and deflation that is happening in reality. The main thrust of this paper is to discuss the causes of inflation and deflation, and how these affect corporate decision-making. To have a better understanding on this anomaly, it is a requirement to study the complex movements of prices and their effects through current situations and events. Inflation and Its Causes Inflation is described by Mukherjee (2002, p.26) â€Å"as a process in which the price level is rising and money is losing its value.† As you can see in figure 1, if the aggregate demand (AD) is increasing faster than the rate of the aggregate supply (AS), the general price level also increases, and this phenomenon is known as inflation. Nowadays, many countries are suffering from higher rates of inflation and sometimes government had to compromise by paying the cost of the reduced productivity. However, many economists have argued that pouring too much money into the economy as a solution would only lead to a more serious inflation (McNeese, 2000, p.22). The main causes of this phenomenon include: Too much demand in the economy. If the demand is high and the available supply cannot meet the demand, general price level would eventually move upward, thereby bringing in inflation or particularly known as demand-pull inflation. This is a situation wherein the rate of demand is faster than the rate of supply leading to a shortage of supply which means that â€Å"an increase in demand will affect prices more than output because firms may not be able to recruit staff more easily or produce more...† (Gillespie, 2007, p.381). Cost-push, monetary, and supply shock inflation. This type of inflation occurred when the supply of money in the circulation is high, causing the purchasing power of people to increase and eventually lead to a demand-pull inflation. On the other hand, cost-push inflation happened when the level of productivity among workers is increasing, labour expenses are also increased and the rate will be added up to the general price level (Grant & Vidler, 2003, p.132). Lastly, supply shock is more or less interrelated with demand-pull inflation; however, this time the supply is generally scarce. For example, the steady increase in prices of oil products in the world market brought by subsequent events particularly in Libya have also contributed to the increase of prices in almost all of the basic commodities. Deflation and Its Causes â€Å"Deflati on is a sustained decrease in the average price level of the entire economy† (Saunders & Gilliard, 2000, p.32). The steady and continuous fall of prices sound interesting to those who are not fully aware of deflation, but this term is not good for the monetary economy because falling prices would adversely affect income that eventually to bankruptcy. As sale, profit and investment fall together, producers are forced to cut

Candida Albicans Microbe Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Candida Albicans Microbe - Essay Example In smears of exudates, Candida appears as a gram-positive, oval budding yeast, 2-3 x 4-6 micrometer, gram-positive, elongated budding cells in chains, or true hyphae. On Sabouraud’s agar incubated at room temperature, soft, cream-colored colonies with a yeasty odor develop. The surface growth consists of oval budding cells. The submerged growth consists of pseudo mycelium. This is composed of pseudohyphae that form blastoconidia at the nodes and sometimes chlamydoconidia terminally. Among the principal predisposing factors to Candida infection are the following: diabetes mellitus, general debility, immunodeficiency, indwelling urinary or intravenous catheters, intravenous opioid abuse, administration of antimicrobials, and corticosteroids. Infection of the mouth (thrush) occurs mainly in infants and in AIDS patients on the Buccal mucous membranes and appears as white adherent patches consisting largely of pseudo mycelium and desquamated epithelium, with the only minimal erosion of the membrane. The growth of Candida in the mouth is enhanced by corticosteroids, antibiotics, high levels of glucose, and immunodeficiency (Drew e.a. 2004, p. 235). Vulvovaginitis resembles thrush but produces irritation, intense itching, and discharge. Loss of an acid pH in the vagina predisposes to candidal vulvovaginitis. Acid pH is normally maintained by the bacterial flora in the vagina. Diabetes, pregnancy, progesterone, and antibiotic therapy predispose to disease (Ponikau e.a., 2005, p. 128). Infection of the skin occurs principally in moist, warm parts of the body, such as the axilla, intergluteal folds, groin, or inframammary folds; it is most common in obese and diabetic individuals. The infected areas become red and weeping and may develop vesicles.

Health care-long term and capstone discussions 2 Essay

Health care-long term and capstone discussions 2 - Essay Example According to Kotter & Heskett (1992), culture change advocates find solutions that regulate everyone’s interactions and behavior. People come up with new ways of responding to others and create a different perception in which they view them. There are various services that the community provides to its people. Community based services are a long term care type which somebody may draw interest and talk about. They are services to help the disabled and senior people in a community. They include; personal care, adult day care, and transportation services among others. Some set of barriers to cultural change success in offering these services are experienced. Communication barrier is one aspect. These are skills involved in conversation. For example, most Hispanic and the Native American patients are often used to indirect communication instead of instruction or direct communication. Offering services to such patients in direct communication thus becomes a problem. A s econd set of barrier is in the care system. These are issues of accessibility, availability and acceptability of services. These services may not be available to the minority group and less accessible due to linguistic, geographic or financial features. Discuss the legal liability in terms of governance in long-term care settings. What agencies have oversight authority? Provide one real life example of a long-term care liability issue that could conflict with a governance function. The requirement by federal law is that facilities for long term care should provide activities and services that maintain the well being of every resident. The federal program in Medicare should be established to achieve such with some written plan that describes how nursing, medical and psychosocial needs shall be met. These are therefore federal regulation which is in the real sense legal. False claims however occur when agencies are set in place to practice

History of fox news Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

History of fox news - Essay Example The Fox News Channel (FNC) is available to a little more than 85 million households in the United States, and even more internationally. The network is based in the U.S. and broadcasts primarily out of its studio in New York City. The Fox News Channel is currently the highest rated cable News Channel. Initially founded by the Australian-American mogul Rupert Murdoch in 1996, the FNC has grown to become the most influential cable news network today. Rupert Murdoch initially created the Fox News Network to represent the conservative point of view in America. At the time, in 1996, Murdoch felt that there was a great need for this niche to be filled in media, as at the time the majority of media was predominantly liberal. The network was designed with the intention of grabbing the attention of viewers. The visual presentation the network uses has been very influential in the presentation of news. Colorful and attention grabbing graphics were designed to constantly remain on the screen, as well as textboxes displaying one-liners summarizing the current topics. This was believed to incite the viewer's interests and increase their understanding of any message the network was attempting to relay. Another attention getter designed by the network is the Fox News Alert, it was designed to interrupt regular programming when breaking stories occurred. The news alerts were designed with swooshing graphics that would fill up the screen and a sharp chiming noise. (Fig1, Wikipedia) This is just an example of the aggressive tactics Murdoch used to launch the network. To rush the networks accessibility, Murdoch paid 11$ per subscribers to cable companies to increase the channels distribution. This was a revolutionary This conflict has led to much controversy surrounding the network. The Controversy In a survey done by the Project for Excellence in Journalism, in 2004, the article cited Fox News as the single news outlet that strikes most journalists as taking a particular ideological stance (2006). Corresponding with this, the Democratic National Committee identified Fox News as a rightwing outlet (York, 2006). On CNN's Larry King during a Jan 17, 2007 interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, King spoke on his opinion of the Network, They're Republican a brand. They're an extension of the Republican Party with some exceptions, [like] Greta van Susteren. But I don't begrudge them that. [Fox CEO] Roger Ailes is an

The BCG Growth Matrix for BSkyB Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

The BCG Growth Matrix for BSkyB - Essay Example The development of business activities around the world has led to the need for new types of strategic tools that will support daily managerial activities – especially the identification and the evaluation of a firm’s competitiveness within the modern market. Towards this direction, extremely effective strategic tools have been designed and are applied by managers internationally offering the necessary basis for the increase of corporate performance – only where particular rules are followed regarding the adaptation of these tools on a specific market. Emphasizing the importance of these strategic tools Shay et al. (1999) noticed that ‘managers today would benefit from strategic analysis tools that foster an understanding of the competitive environment from multiple perspectives’ (Shay et al., 1999, 559); however, it is necessary than in each case the appropriate strategic tool is chosen by a firm’s managers making sure that its use will benef it the firm both in the short and the long term. The current paper focuses on the examination of the role and the importance of a particular strategic tool, the BCG matrix (see Appendix, Figure 1) for the performance of a specific firm based in the UK, the British Sky Broadcasting Group plc (BSkyB). The specific firm is among the FTSE 100 firms having a significant position in the British market. Therefore, the examination of its daily activities using the BCG matrix has been considered to help towards the identification of the effectiveness of this matrix when used by modern firms especially those with a simultaneous presence in many industrial sectors (like in the case of BSkyB which operates in both the telecommunications and the TV broadcasting sectors).

Research project on agrotourism in brazil Essay

Research project on agrotourism in brazil - Essay Example The farmers would open their farms and give tourists an opportunity to visit remote rural parts of the world that normally people would not have an opportunity to visit. For this project, the research work was carried out in South America, and specifically in Brazil. Tourist could view activities, such as harvesting and provide hands on help in the process, and actually observe how sugar canes, locally grown fruits, corn, coconuts, etc. were harvested in the country of origin. From a farmer’s perspective, the objective of agritourism by welcoming tourism into their community was to receive income from tourism activities, thus enabling the farmers and local communities to benefit financially. In this project, the local community would not be a part of an overseas operation that took a higher proportion of their lively hoods, by corrupt methods. Agritourism would strive for the economic development, cultural preservation, rural development, and achieve sustainable growth in the future. The project aims to benefit not only the farmers or the people directly involved in the project, but also contribute to the growth and development of the whole community. Thaise Guzzatti has developed such a plan for Brazil, and according to her, agritourism model brought new sources of income for rural families, prompting rural development and preserved local culture and community, while benefiting the tourist simultaneously (â€Å"Thaise Guzzatti,† 2007). With the help of agritourism, it would be possible to develop the remote rural areas and make them more sustainable in the future. An agricultural tourism model should be designed to help compliment the local community, blend with the community, and offer support and encouragement, rather than overwhelm it with tourism activities. It should help promote better infrastructure, stability in the community, more jobs
